Diego Gomez Nicola
Prof. Diego Gomez-Nicola is a Professor of Neuroimmunology and the Deputy Head of the School of Biological Sciences (Research) at the University of Southampton. He completed his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology (Neurosciences) at the Autonoma University of Madrid in 2008, focusing on the role of IL-15 in inflammation regulation in the central nervous system under the supervision of Prof. Nieto-Sampedro at the Cajal Institute.
After his Ph.D., Prof. Gomez-Nicola conducted postdoctoral research at the National Hospital of Paraplegics in Toledo, Spain. He then moved to the University of Southampton in the UK to continue his postdoctoral training under the supervision of Prof. Perry, supported by a Marie Curie fellowship from the EU. In 2013, he established his independent lab with a New Investigator Grant from the MRC.
In 2019, Prof. Gomez-Nicola served as the Head of Neuroimmunology at Eli Lilly & Co. in Erl Wood, Surrey, where he led preclinical efforts targeting neuroinflammation in neurodegeneration and pain. He has since returned to the University of Southampton to lead his academic team, focusing on studying microglia in health and disease.
As a neuroscientist, Prof. Gomez-Nicola is interested in unveiling the roles of glial cells in the healthy and diseased brain, aiming to understand the fascinating complexity of our brain.
